Description
Casa Pantis is a two-storey house built in 1923 by MH Baillie-Scott and Beresford for N.H Bacon Esq. The exterior is of over-painted brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with some later 20th-century alterations. The roof is hipped and covered in hand-made clay tiles, featuring two brick ridge stacks. The design is asymmetrical, unified by a projecting square porch at the centre of the front facade. The porch has an arched entrance and arched mullion windows above. A battened entrance door features a central light and wrought iron details. A projecting square stair tower rises behind the porch, with rectangular leaded windows at the first floor. To the right of the porch are central leaded windows with shutters on the ground floor, flanked by pairs of smaller lights and rectangular mullioned windows at first floor. An adjoining single-storey garage block with a gable roof is situated to the far right. Recessed to the left of the porch are leaded mullion windows and shutters on the ground floor. Later 20th-century additions to the rear include a porch, a uPVC conservatory, and an extension, along with enlarged first-floor windows.
The interior features a ground-floor central open room reminiscent of a medieval 'hall'. It includes oak detailing such as moulded beams, joists and columns, and a large brick-built inglenook fireplace at the east end. A dog-leg staircase has a moulded handrail, square balusters and square newell posts with facetted finials. Internal timber battened doors have wrought iron strap hinges, latches and chains. The original window latches and stays are largely in place.
Casa Pantis is considered a well-executed example of a modest suburban house designed by a leading architectural partnership of the Arts and Crafts movement. While later 20th-century alterations to the rear elevation do not enhance the architectural composition, the quality facade, good fixtures and fittings, including the staircase, windows, doors and oak detailing, compensate for these changes. The house possesses both special historic interest and architectural quality, meeting the criteria for listing.
