Description
The Church of St Martin is a stone and flint rubble church that dates back to the 12th century. The nave and south door are from this period, and there is a Norman round-headed window located in the south-west of the nave. The chancel was rebuilt in the 14th to 15th centuries. The west tower, which features battlements, is from the early 15th century but underwent significant repairs in the 16th and 17th centuries, during which it was partly rebuilt in brick. This tower has corner buttresses with five offsets and is topped by a small cupola with a weather vane that bears the date 1679. The church was extensively restored in 1883, which included rebuilding the south porch and adding an organ chamber. Inside, there are brasses commemorating Johannes Walthan from 1418, Richard Walthan from 1426, and John Malthouse from 1447. Additionally, there is a "dugout" iron-bound sycamore chest from the 13th to 14th centuries. The Church of St Martin, along with Little Waltham Hall, Hulmans, and The Old Rectory, forms a group.
