Description
Russell's Barn is a barn dating from the late 14th century, located on the east side of Bell Street in Great Baddow. The structure features 19th and 20th century weatherboarding over a timber frame and has a corrugated iron gambrel roof. It has a three-bay plan with a central threshing floor. The south side includes a 20th century twist access, a 20th century window, and two large 20th century glazed doors, one of which is in a former entry.
Inside, the barn has jowled aisle and arcade posts with raking braces, and three-way arch bracing from the aisle posts to the arcade plates and cambered tie beams. The construction includes edge-halved scarf joints with housed bridled abutments and face keys. The end wall frames are made of close-studded timbers with arch bracing to the girths and cill plate. The original 14th century crown post roof has been removed. This barn is noted as an unusually fine example of a small 14th century barn.
