Description

Aubyns is a considerably restored timber-framed house dating from circa 1500. It is arranged as a hall house with cross wings at the east and west ends. The general impression is effective, with all the timber framing exposed. The north front of the cross wings and the west side of the west wing have a jettied first storey, supported on exposed joists and featuring a heavy angle post and bracket. On the ground floor of the west wing are three blocked original openings, likely a shop, and a blocked original doorway. The wings are two storeys high, while the central block is one storey. A south extension to the west wing features a jettied and plastered upper storey. The windows are mainly mullioned casements with lattice leaded lights. The roof is tiled. The interior retains original features including moulded ceiling beams. The buildings around The Green form a group, alongside numbers 8, 10, 38, 52, and 25, which are buildings of local interest.
