Description
The tombstone of Sir Charles Nicholson and his family, dated 1927, is made from a single carved limestone slab. It is located approximately 2 meters south-west of the west tower of the Grade I listed Church of St Mary. In the churchyard, there are five listed tombstones, including an 18th-century chest tomb and a group of four 18th-century headstones, all of which are Grade II.
The tombstone has a shallow, rectangular shape with chamfered edges and rests on a very low, slightly stepped base. Its upper surface features a horizontal relief of a simple cross on a stepped base. The left (north) chamfered edge is inscribed with the relief capital letters “Evelyn Louise Nicholson 1867-1927.” The right (south) chamfered edge reads “Charles Archibald Nicholson 1867-1949.” The top chamfered edge is inscribed with “CMN 1883-1962,” while the bottom chamfered edge simply bears the letters “RIP.”
