Description
The coach house, located approximately 7 metres south-east of the rear wing of Newnum House, dates from the early 19th century. It is built of red brick in Flemish bond with lime mortar and features a slate roof. The rectangular structure faces northwest and includes a lean-to greenhouse at the rear.
This single-storey building has two pairs of plain vehicle doors, each with a plain overlight above. The central entrance features a plain boarded door with a wider fanlight, projecting imposts that are likely painted stone, and a semicircular arch made of gauged brick. The glazing bars form a rectangular grid.
On the front elevation, there are two Royal Exchange firemarks, one positioned above each pair of vehicle doors. The low-pitched hipped roof is topped with a central hexagonal turret, which consists of hexagonal posts that are louvred at the bottom, an ogival cupola with a dentilled eaves cornice, a lead roof, and a weathervane.
On the right side, there is a blocked door aperture filled with 20th-century bricks. The rear wall shows a straight joint near the middle, with handmade bricks on either side, and the courses are out of alignment, creating a low parapet. A 20th-century chimney shaft is located on the rear pitch of the roof. The central doorway's design is similar to a blocked doorway found on the northeast elevation of the rear wing of Newnum House, which was originally part of the stable range associated with the coach house.
