Description

The icehouse located 60 metres north-west of St Leonards is an early 19th-century structure built of red brick in header bond. It has undergone minor alterations for use as an air raid shelter around 1939, which include a concrete and iron door frame at the entrance and a concrete floor approximately 0.50 metres below ground level. An iron door is currently lying loose inside. The original entrance tunnel is missing and has been replaced by 20th-century low retaining walls. A rock garden was created over the brick dome around 1988. This icehouse is shown on the First, Second, and Third Editions of the 1:2500 OS map from 1874 and is likely contemporary with the associated house, St Leonards.
