Description

1 and 2 Mapletree Lane are two cottages that have been combined, dating from the late 18th century and 19th century. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and feature a roof made of handmade red clay tiles and slate. The 18th-century cottage, which faces southeast, has a rectangular plan with an external stack at each end. Originally a single storey with attics beneath a gambrel roof, it was extended at the rear in the 19th century to create a catslide.

To the right is the 19th-century cottage, which consists of two parallel ranges also facing southeast, with two external stacks to the right and two storeys. There is a single-storey lean-to on the right that encloses the front stack. The left cottage is fully cement-rendered, including the stacks, and has a tiled roof. It features two 19th or 20th-century casement windows and two additional casements in the lean-to dormers. The original plain boarded door is off-centre and set in a jointed and pegged frame. At the rear, there is a central gabled dormer that has been reduced to a small fixed light.

The right cottage has exposed brickwork, except for the rear stack, which is cement-rendered, and it is roofed with slate. On the ground floor, there is one sash window with six over six lights and horns, while the first floor has a similar sash without horns, likely original. A 20th-century door is present as well. The rear elevation features an original horizontal sash window with six over six lights on the first floor, with a cement-rendered dado. The lean-to on the right is weatherboarded and roofed with red clay pantiles. This pair of cottages retains its original character exceptionally well, mainly due to their small scale and the compatible nature of the additions, a quality that should be preserved in any future alterations.
