Description
This icehouse, located 50 metres north-west of the main gates to Howick Hall, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century and was altered in the 20th century. The exterior is made of squared tooled stone, while the interior features brick. It is a circular structure that barely rises above ground level, with eight steps leading down to a square-headed doorway on the north side and a window opening on the south side. Inside, the diameter is 3.6 metres, and it has a low domical vault along with one blocked cupboard. The current floor and window opening are later additions, possibly modified for use as an air-raid shelter.
