Description
The barn located 15 metres east of Howletts Hall dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, topped with a peg-tiled roof. This barn is notable for having 15 bays, making it the longest in the district. There is a midstrey at bay 9 and a porch on the west side. At the southern end, a red brick cottage has been built onto and into the barn.
Inside, the barn features trusses with collars and tie-beams, as well as queen posts with small raking struts supporting the principal rafters. The side purlins are tenoned into the principal rafters and staggered across the successive bays. The wall plates show face halved and bladed scarfs, and the side walls have primary braced framing. The variations in construction along the barn's length indicate a 17th-century origin with 18th-century alterations.
