Description
This is an early 19th century house, with 20th century alterations, originally serving as a post office. Its unusual plan is a truncated circular segment, with a curved front following the road corner. The front, or northwest elevation, is of rendered timber-framing, with slight buttresses marking where brick gable end walls project. It has a three-window range, with cast-iron casement windows and glazing bars. The ground floor windows are three-light with an upper transom, the lights containing 3x5 and 3x2 panes. A six-panel flush door is set between the ground floor windows, within a 20th century doorcase reminiscent of the early 19th century. The first floor has two three-light and one central two-light windows, each with 3x5 panes. The northeast garden elevation features an early 19th century red brick gable end wall, with some burnt headers, and a central flush stack. A 20th century fully glazed French window is present on the ground floor. A single-storey red brick addition from the 20th century is attached to the northeast corner, featuring a balcony above. This addition contains a single light casement and a fully glazed door. The interior was completely refurbished in the 20th century. Iron spear-head railings with pine-cone finials run along the front of the house, continuing to those at a nearby cottage. The building is part of a group that also includes Luptons, Wealdcote and granary, The Cottage, and the Tower Arms.
