Description

Fern Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations and extensions in the 20th century. From 1903 to 1969, it served as a post office. The construction combines painted timber framing, painted brick and rendered infill panels on a stone rubble plinth, with painted render imitating timber framing on the rear extensions. The roof is tiled, with a brick eaves chimney to the rear. The building has an L-shaped layout, comprising a two-storey and attic front range facing south, and single-storey and attic cross-wing extensions to the rear.

The south front is a two-bay range of square framing, seven panels high, with a pair of tension braces at both floor levels. It contains two 20th-century multi-pane casement windows at each storey, with the right-hand window elaborated into a bow window. A tiled weatherboard covers the ground floor window to the right. The west gable end also features square framing, seven panels high, with tension braces on each storey, a gable-end truss with a straight tie beam, twin collars, and vertical struts. A two-light attic casement is present, along with a 20th-century glazed door at ground floor level. The east gable end is similar to the west, but the ground floor is covered by a single-storey hipped tiled extension. The rear of the property exhibits a later single-storey and attic L-shaped wing with painted render mimicking timber framing. The interior was not inspected.
