Description
Old Smithy Cottage is a house that was formerly used as both a toll house and a smithy. It dates from the early 17th century and has 20th-century extensions. The building features a timber frame with painted rendered infill panels sitting on a restored brick plinth, along with painted rendered extensions. The roofs are plain-tiled, and there is a large projecting stack at the rear with a brick shaft. The structure consists of a two-bay range that is single-storey with an attic, along with end and rear extensions.
The street-facing side has square framing that is three panels high, featuring two 20th-century casement windows and two 20th-century boarded doors. There is also a single timber-framed gabled dormer with two 20th-century casements. To the right, there is a single-storey 20th-century extension.
On the left return gable, the square framing is two panels high and includes a straight tension brace and three 20th-century casements. The gable-end truss has a straight tie beam, a collar with twin raking struts above, and four raking struts framing three 20th-century casements. The roof shows evidence of a single trenched purlin. The rear of the cottage is covered by a hipped single-storey and gabled two-storey 20th-century extensions. The interior has not been inspected.
