Description

Shakenhurst is a country house set in a landscaped park, originally built in the 17th century and remodelled in 1798. It is constructed of red brick with a plain tiled roof that features a parapet, along with large brick stacks at the ends and on the ridge. The house stands three storeys tall and has a modillion eaves cornice on the front and a dentilled eaves cornice on the sides and rear. The façade is arranged in a 1:3:1 bay pattern, with the outer bays projecting forward and featuring full-height central bay windows. All windows have gauged flat heads, large keyblocks, and stone sills, with 15-pane sashes on the ground floor, 12-pane sashes on the first floor, and 6-pane sashes on the second floor. The central porch is adorned with an open pediment supported by Ionic columns and has half-glazed double doors.

Inside, the main rooms are decorated with moulded cornices and doorheads. The hall, which occupies the central three bays of the ground floor, includes a large stone fireplace flanked by Corinthian columns and featuring an urn relief. A 17th-century dog-leg oak staircase is notable for having three turned balusters per tread. Additionally, 17th-century linenfold panelling with fishscale detail has been preserved in the rear ground floor, resembling that of the choir stalls in the Church of St Bartholomew. Shakenhurst was the seat of the Wigley family.
