Description
The Lodge, located about half a mile east of Shakenhurst, is a lodge dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick and rendered infill, topped with plain tiled roofs. The building has a hall and cross-wing layout, with the hall consisting of three framed bays oriented east to west. The upper west bay includes three star-shaped ridge stacks and a timber-framed outshut on its north side. The cross-wing at the west gable end has two framed bays; the northernmost bay is lower and narrower, allowing the north outshut to overlap with part of the southernmost bay.
The Lodge is two storeys high. The framing of the hall consists of three large panels from sill to wall-plate, with long straight braces in the lower corners. The cross-wing has four panels from sill to wall-plate, with short straight braces in the upper corners, and the north bay jetties on shaped brackets. There are collar and tie-beam trusses throughout; the hall and south cross-wing bay have three struts to the collar and a V-strut in the apex, while the jettied north bay of the cross-wing has two struts to the collar. The gable ends feature plank weatherings on shaped brackets, with wall-plates that slightly project on similar brackets.
On the north front elevation, the hall has a probable large blocked window in the central bay and two brick raking buttresses on the left bay. The outshut has a rectangular light on the left side and a timber-framed porch adjacent to the jettied cross-wing bay. This porch features an ogee-headed archway with a ball finial, a two-light window on the left side, and a large doorway inside with a moulded architrave and a moulded and studded door. The gable end of the cross-wing has a bay window beneath the jetty with 20th-century casements and a two-light casement on the first floor. A brick stack is located to the left of the ridge of the south cross-wing bay. The interior has not been inspected, and there are 20th-century lean-to additions at the rear.
