Description
The lodge to Rochetts is an early 19th-century building, with later 20th-century alterations. Constructed of brick and roughcast rendered, it has a thatched roof. The lodge is circular in plan, featuring a central stack, with a 20th-century addition to the northeast side. It is single-storey with a deep eave overhang supported by an arcade of wooden posts with rustic braces. There are three original iron casement windows with pulls, latches, and saddle bars, each containing six rows and five panes of leaded glass; one window retains its stay attached to the sill. The window frames have moulded architraves. One window has been boarded over within its original frame. A 20th-century PVC French window, designed to resemble leaded panes, is set within the original door opening, and is framed to look like a window. A roughcast addition with a flat roof extends from the northeast side, including a central door with a lower sunk panel and upper glazing with leaded panes. To either side of the door are a four-light casement window with leaded panes, and a long two-light casement window with leaded panes. The interior has been refurbished, with the central stack standing free and an open fireplace at both the front and back. According to local accounts, the lodge was originally a game larder, a topic explored in an article in Essex Countryside. The lodge is part of a group with the Queen Mary Chapel and the granary.
