Description

Nos. 43 and 45 Hutton Village are a pair of houses built around 1800. They are timber-framed in elm with primary bracing, plastered and weatherboarded, topped with a peg-tiled roof. A central red brick chimney stack serves both houses. The rectangular plan features a central kitchen projection at the rear, also in red brick.

Each house is two storeys tall, with the east front elevation displaying a ground-floor door and window, along with a single window on the first floor. The door and window frames are moulded, and the window sashes have glazing bars arranged in 3x4 panes. The doorways feature simple hoods supported by shaped brackets, and the doors have four flush reeded panels, with the upper panels of No. 45 now glazed. Some ashlar detailing remains visible in the front plasterwork.

On the rear west elevation, the houses are weatherboarded, with a central projecting brick block that has a pantiled roof. Each house has boarded back doors and a single light casement window. There are also weatherboarded, slated lean-to toilets against the west face. Each house has one ground and one first-floor window on the rear wall, featuring 2-light casements with glazing bars in a 2x4 pane configuration, except for the first floor of No. 45, which has a single central glazing bar with 2x2 panes. The north and south elevations are also weatherboarded.

Inside, the interiors are plain, but No. 45 includes an early 19th-century cast-iron fireplace on the ground floor, featuring reeding and Adam-esque details. These houses are significant as they represent a diminishing example of vernacular architecture once common in Essex and have undergone very little alteration.
