Description
Angel Cottage, formerly known as the Old Angel, is a house that was originally an inn. It dates back to the early 15th century and features a timber-framed hall house with a crosswing to the north. The building has been altered and has a large extension to the north that was added in the late 20th century. The exterior is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a tiled roof and brick chimneystacks.
The hall is one bay wide and has a 20th-century casement window on the ground floor, with a small gabled dormer above. A large brick stack is located on the south wall, and the hall originally extended further south. The two-storey cross-wing is likely slightly later than the hall but shares similar carpentry features. It has a jettied front supported by wooden brackets, a shallow five-light bay window on the ground floor with a moulded brick base and original moulded window frame, and a 20th-century casement window on the upper floor. The north stack includes two diagonal brick flues, and the north elevation features an old doorway with a four-centred head.
Although the interior has not been inspected, it is reported to have an original crownpost rafter roof with one moulded crownpost. The rear of the property has large 20th-century additions.
