Description

94 Bradford Street is a mid-16th century house that features a timber frame and rendered exterior, with 19th and 20th century additions. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building is two stories high and consists of three bays, with later extensions added to the rear. The façade was remodeled in the 20th century and includes a central front door with a classical arch surround, flanked by leaded light windows from around 1920. The ground floor windows have six lights each, while the first floor has a combination of five lights on the left side and two light and three light windows on the right side.

On the rear elevation, there are two gables featuring long 20th century leaded light windows and a central door. Inside, the ground floor rooms showcase original exposed spine beams and floor joists, all with run-out chamfer stops. The south wall reveals exposed pegged 16th century studs. The first floor has an open truss with splayed head posts and mortices for arched braces, along with exposed 16th century studs and internal arched bracing. There is a 16th century window with a shutter groove that has been infilled on the rear wall, now serving as an internal feature. The attic contains a 16th century clasped purlin roof with collars on the principal rafters and cranked wind braces, as well as face halved scarf joints with under squinted abutments and side pegs to the purlins. Remnants of wattle and daub infill are also present, along with 19th century roof trusses in the rear wing.

This building is significant due to its architectural interest, well-preserved features, and the rarity of its 16th century timber frame, which is hidden behind an altered façade. It also has group value with the nearby listed buildings on Bradford Street, an area noted for its medieval and Tudor houses, reflecting the prosperity of the woollen cloth trade in Braintree.
