Description
Eyston Smyths Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 15th century, with later additions and alterations from the 17th century. It is constructed with a timber frame and has plastered walls. The building features a hipped red plain tiled crosswing that is two storeys high, along with a one-storey and attic range to the left, which includes a gabled dormer and a lean-to extension with red tiles. The crosswing has one window range and is double jettied, supported by four brackets on each side, with the right bullnosed beam jetty exposed internally. A central attached shaft red brick chimney stack is present. Inside, there is a circa 1500 inglenook fireplace with salt alcoves and bread oven arches, along with a cambered wooden mantel beam and brick floors. The bridging joist features foliate chamfer stops, and there is a mullion window. An internal plaster bears the date 1683, indicating work done to the later range. The farmhouse also includes a fine early staircase sourced from another location, a cambered floor, and unusual tenons on the floor joists. The roof was originally constructed with crown posts.
