Description
The Colne Park Column is a monument located 250 metres north of Colne Park House, built in 1791 by Sir John Soane for Philip Astle Hills. It is made of limestone and features a copper urn. The column has a square plinth with cruciform spurs, a moulded base, and an Ionic capital topped with a copper urn that has a pineapple head. An inscription on the south side of the plinth reads 'Michaeli Roberto Hills Arm. Philippus Hills Observantiae Ergo P MDCCLXXXI'. As of April 1986, the urn was reported missing, having been blown down and was under local repair. A publication titled 'Colne Engaine, The Story of an Essex Parish' from 1975 includes an illustration and notes that the urn is riddled with bullet-holes, along with a contemporary account of its erection. The column stands at a height of 23 metres.
