Description

No. 89 West Street is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof covered in handmade red plain tiles. The house has four bays facing north and features an axial stack in the second bay from the left end, which was rebuilt in the 20th century. This configuration forms a lobby-entrance that is now blocked. There is a wing from the 18th or 19th century at the rear left, and a 20th-century in-line extension to the right that matches the rear wing, along with a single-storey extension with a flat roof situated between the two wings. A small lean-to extension is located at the left end of the building.

The house is two storeys high with an unlit attic. On the ground floor, there are four sash windows with 16 lights, while the first floor has five sash windows, some of which are early 19th-century with crown glass, and others are reproductions. A 20th-century door is found in the right return. The roof is half-hipped at both ends, and the posts have sharply angled jowls. Inside, there are chamfered transverse and axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, plain joists, and one binding beam that is jointed for a former jetty and has been re-used. The original clasped purlin roof includes later intruded timber.

Pine doors with four horizontal panels, reported to be from Ingatestone Manor, have been introduced. The 20th-century right extension features a chamfered axial beam and plain joists of square section from around 1600, which have been accurately reconstructed. The 19th-century stippled plaster from the former right external wall has been enclosed in the attic. The property underwent extensive renovations around 1985.
