Description

This house, dating to approximately 1600, has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed, with exposed framing on the front, and plastered elsewhere, covered by a roof of handmade red plain tiles. The main south-facing range consists of two bays, one of which was originally a wagon-way passage extending through the building, with a room above, now blocked. An axial stack is located on the left side of the right bay, creating a lobby entrance. A one-bay wing extends to the rear of the right bay.

The house is two storeys high and has a two-window front with early 19th century sash windows, each with 16 lights. The front door is an early 19th century design, featuring six panels – the lower panels being flush – with a simple doorcase and a shallow flat hood, approached by a single stone step. The top of the wagon-way forms the sill of the left first-floor window, and it is blocked with nailed studs. The head and both jambs are ovolo-moulded, with short arched braces across the top corners. Below the eaves of the right bay are two original small flank windows, each with a single ovolo mullion, now blocked.

The room situated above the wagon-way has a boxed axial beam and a 20th century hearth. In the room above that, studding with trenched curved braces is visible through the wallpaper on both sides, alongside a blocked hearth. The right ground-floor room features a chamfered axial beam, unstopped, with joists plastered to the soffits. The room above the ground floor has a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops, and a blocked hearth. The rear roof plate is chamfered with lamb's tongue stops, with a girt below being cut for the staircase. Jowled posts are present. The rear wing has a roof with a clasped purlin. The roof of the main range has been rebuilt.
