Description

This is an ancillary building, now used as garages, located approximately 25 metres north of The Vine Public House in Great Bardfield. It dates from the 16th century and was extended in the 18th century. The building is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of corrugated iron. It has six bays facing southwest and was extended to the left by three bays in the 18th century. There is a single-storey lean-to extension made of corrugated iron at the left end and a single-storey extension with a slate roof at the right end. The building is one storey high with attics and features one plain boarded door and five open garage bays. It has two swept dormers without window frames. Notable architectural details include jowled posts, curved bracing set inside heavy studding, edge-halved and bridled scarfs in the wallplates, and diamond mortises for unglazed windows in the back and front on the upper storey, along with wattle fixings. The principal rafters have been reduced for clasped purlins, and the collars are missing, with common rafters replaced in softwood. The original purpose of the building is uncertain, but it was likely used for industrial or commercial purposes rather than domestic. The ground level has risen over time, and currently, only a small part is floored. The span of the building is approximately 3.5 metres.
