Description
This is an ancillary building located approximately 6 metres south of Russell's Farmhouse. It dates from the early 16th century and was altered in the 17th century. The building is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. It has two bays facing northwest and features a single-storey extension at the front with a catslide roof. There is also a lean-to extension at the right end, which encloses a 17th-century wood-burning hearth, although the chimney has been demolished. The building stands two storeys high and includes jowled posts and heavy studding with 'Suffolk' bracing that is trenched to the outside. Inside, there is a chamfered binding beam with step stops, and plain joists of horizontal section that are jointed to it with soffit tenons and diminished haunches. The upper storey of the rear wall has two blocked unglazed windows, each featuring three diamond mullions. The roof structure consists of a crownpost with axial bracing. This building is of high quality and represents an unusual type, and its proximity to the farmhouse suggests it was originally used as a granary.
