Description

Littlebury Farmhouse is a house dating back to the 17th century, with a significant remodelling in the early 19th century, and a later rear extension. The building is timber-framed and has a rendered exterior, topped with a slate hipped roof. There are two symmetrically placed red brick stacks on the front of the house, and one on the rear range. The front features two vertically sliding sash windows, each with eight panes, marginal glazing, and moulded architraves. A central doorcase is fitted with a key pattern, entablature and a canopy window above. The four-panelled door includes two stained glass lights. Remains of a wooden verandah with a glazed roof are present, showcasing wooden posts with ogee spandrels and trelliswork.

The front range is a three-bay house aligned north to south, with a narrow central bay. The south bay (right-hand side) has transverse and axial binding joists, which are chamfered with lambs tongue stops. The floor joists are covered with plaster ceilings. The house retains a good oak frame, which features deep jowled storey posts. Evidence suggests there were originally fully pegged close studded walls with wattle housings, along with a face halved and bladed scarf in the front wall plate. Original wide oak floor joists, lap jointed, are found on the first floor and into the attic. The original roof was lost during the 19th-century remodelling, though many of its timbers were reused. The present staircase is located in part of the original stair tower. Original vertical sliding shutters are still present in the north ground floor room. A pilastered arch connects the staircase to the landing.
