Description
Scrip's Cottage, located at the rear of Scrip's House, is a house dating from the 17th century, with an extension added in the 20th century. The cottage is timber framed and weatherboarded, topped with handmade red plain tiles. It consists of four bays aligned northwest to southeast, featuring an internal stack near the northern corner. A flat-roofed, two-storey extension was added to the northeast of the stack in the 20th century. There is also a single-storey lean-to extension made of red brick, roofed with red clay pantiles, which connects this extension to Scrip's House, although Scrip's House itself is not included in this listing. The cottage has one storey with attics and features a round window on the southwest elevation, which has a lead surround and was likely inserted in the 20th century. All other windows are 20th-century casements, and there is a 20th-century door on the southeast elevation, located within the yard at the rear of Scrip's House. Inside, there are chamfered binding beams with lamb's tongue stops, and plain joists of vertical section that are jointed to the binding beams using soffit tenons with diminished haunches. The middle and southeast internal tiebeams were removed in the 18th century and replaced by knees that are forelocked down to the binding beams. There was originally no tiebeam between the two northwest bays. The floors are made of hardwood floorboards.
