Description

A range of four attached cottages dates from the early 19th century, with alterations made in the later 19th and 20th centuries. The cottages are timber-framed with roughcast rendering and plaster, some weatherboarding, and a roof of handmade red plain tiles. They present a single range facing east, featuring three axial stacks. A full-length single-storey lean-to extension to the rear was added in the later 19th century, roofed with slate, alongside two 20th-century single-storey wings covered with corrugated asbestos. The cottages are two storeys high. On the ground floor, there are four mid-19th century sash windows, each with six lights. The first floor has four early 19th century sash windows, each with sixteen lights, and a smaller 19th-century casement or fixed light above the door of number 24. Numbers 22 and 26 have 20th-century half-glazed doors. Number 24 has a 19th-century half-glazed four-panel door, while number 28 has a plain boarded door. All doors have simple 19th-century doorcases with pediments on profiled brackets. A plaque reading “Grange Hill Cottages” is positioned on the first floor, at the middle. The roof is hipped at the left end. The roof structure comprises handsawn hardwood. The cottages are included on the list for their group value.
