Description

The Grange is a house located on Grange Hill in Coggeshall, dating from around 1600, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof covered in handmade red plain tiles. The main part of the house faces northwest and features two axial stacks. There are two rear wings, one at the left end and one near the right end, with an external stack on the right. Between these wings is a stair tower and a single-storey lean-to extension that has a slate roof. The house has three storeys.

On the ground floor, there is one 18th or early 19th-century sash window with 12 lights and two early 19th-century tripartite sashes with configurations of 2-12-2 lights. The first floor features two similar sashes and two early 19th-century tripartite sashes with 4-12-4 lights. The second floor has three early 19th-century sashes with 16 lights. The entrance includes an off-centre fielded and moulded eight-panel door with oval lights in the top panels, set in a doorcase with fluted pilasters and a moulded flat canopy, along with an introduced plaster bust in place of each capital. The main range and the left rear wing both have hipped roofs.

There is also a single-storey splayed bay with full-height sashes featuring 4+4 lights on the left return, dating from the late 19th century. The stair tower has a gabled dormer on the right, although the window is blocked. Access to the interior was refused during a survey in July 1987, but it has been reported that internal features described in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (RCHM) for Little Coggeshall are present. The house is depicted on an estate map from 1639 held at the Essex Record Office.
