Description

This is a house, now divided into three attached cottages, dating from the early 17th century and altered in the 19th century. It is located on Grange Hill, Coggeshall. The house is timber-framed and plastered, with a roof covered in handmade red plain tiles. It comprises a two-bay crosswing on the left and a main range to the right, forming a rectangular plan facing east. There are two 19th-century axial stacks in the main range, and three 19th-century rear wings, two of which also have axial stacks. The house has two storeys and a five-window front with early 19th-century sash windows of 16 lights, featuring much crown glass. There are also three 19th-century half-glazed doors. The roof is hipped. The crosswing features jowled posts and chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops at both storeys; the roof was rebuilt to align with that of the main range. The property is documented on estate maps from 1639 and 1832, held at the Essex Record Office.
