Description
Long Bridge is a road bridge over the River Blackwater with origins dating back to the 13th century, although it has been significantly altered in the 20th century. The bridge is constructed of red brick in both English and Flemish bond, featuring stone coping. It spans the river from north to south, with original fabric visible on the west side, while the east side was widened in the 20th century.
On the west side, there are three slightly pointed arches made of 13th-century brickwork, with the central arch being wider and higher than the others. This side also has two brick cutwaters that support an iron girder in an H-section, which holds up the modern parapet. The east side features three round arches made of 20th-century brickwork and two concrete buttresses.
Each parapet wall includes a bronze plaque on the inside embossed with 'Essex County Council 1912', and the stone copings are of triangular section with a rounded crest. The southeast parapet is designed to splay towards Monkwell, while the others align with the road; all parapets were constructed later than the bridge itself. The bridge was illustrated by J. Greig in "Excursions through Essex" in 1818.
