Description
The Old Lace Shop is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber framed and plastered, topped with handmade red plain tiles. The building has two bays facing south, featuring an original external stack at the right end and a 20th-century stack in the front left corner. There is a single-storey wing from the 19th century at the front of the left end. The house has two storeys and attics, with the ground floor containing one 19th-century horizontal sash window and one 20th-century casement window. The first floor has three 20th-century casements, along with two more in 20th-century gabled dormers. A four-panel door is located on the right side of the front wing. The first-floor windows on the left return and the rear elevation are of an unusual type and may be 20th-century assemblies of earlier components. The main stack is plastered, and the building features jowled posts and close studding with slightly curved braces trenched to the inside. The wallplate has a face-halved and bladed scarf joint. There is a disused wood-burning hearth made of 0.33 metre brickwork, with a chamfered mantel beam that has lamb's tongue stops, and a smaller later 17th-century inserted hearth on the first floor, with jambs of 0.23 metre brickwork. Above the ground floor, there are chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue and notch stops, and plain joists of vertical section. The first floor has a similar original attic floor with more elaborate stops, each featuring an additional step. The name "The Old Lace Shop" is a recent addition.
