Description
Short Bridge is a road bridge with railings over Back Ditch, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick and cast iron and is aligned north-south over a leat that leads to Abbey Mill, which runs northeast-southwest. The bridge features one semi-circular arch, with 20th-century brickwork added to the eastern side. There are two iron ties running through the bridge, each with cast iron roundels at either end. The coping is made of cast iron and has a stilted segmental section.
On each side of the bridge, the cast iron railings consist of a heavy stanchion in an urn baluster form with an urn finial at each end, along with eight lighter intermediate stanchions that do not have finials. Between the stanchions are four plain square bars, with five in the end sections. The rail has a wave section and turns outwards at each end, featuring short square spikes. An oval plate embossed with 'LC' (for Little Coggeshall) is located at the base of the southwest stanchion. The average height of the railing above the road is 1.20 meters. The bridge is named Short Bridge on a map from 1731. It was formerly a toll bridge.
