Description

A terrace of almshouses, likely dating from the 18th century or earlier, and altered in the 19th century. The buildings are timber-framed and faced with yellow brick in a Flemish bond, with decorative red brick detailing, and have roofs of handmade red clay tiles. They form a single range of attached cottages facing south, with one axial stack to the left of centre and another at the right end. Originally likely comprising five units, two were combined to create number 4. Rear extensions exist. The almshouses are one storey high with attics. Number 2, at the right end, has two 19th-century casement windows and two more in lean-to dormers. Number 4 has one 19th-century horizontal sash window of 16 lights, one of 12 lights, and one casement, and one horizontal sash window of 12 lights within lean-to dormers. Number 6 features one sash window of 16 lights, and one horizontal sash of 12 lights in a lean-to dormer. Number 8 has one horizontal sash of 12 lights, and one 20th-century casement window within a lean-to dormer. All ground-floor windows have moulded stone lintels. The terrace has five identical late 19th-century four-panel doors, each with two lights glazed with coloured leaded glass; number 4 has two doors. There are three late 19th-century porches, two double and one single, with gabled roofs supported by slender turned wooden stanchions. Two courses of red brick are visible near the top of the front elevation. The terrace is an attractive group when viewed alongside The Old School House. Although some window replacements have occurred, the original window openings remain unaltered, and the scale of the replacements maintains the original cottage character.
