Description

A silk-throwing mill was built in 1810 by George Courtauld, representing an interesting and unusual example of early 19th-century industrial development. The mill comprises three blocks of similar design from the same period. The most significant block faces North onto South Street, standing two storeys high with basements at its eastern end. The upper storey is clad in weatherboards, while the ground storey is constructed of brick. The facade features long runs of windows containing fixed lights and top-hung casements, characterised by glazing bars and small panes of glass. The eastern section of this block steps back slightly and has a five-window range of double-hung sashes with glazing bars. A single doorway is present, incorporating a semi-circular fanlight and pilasters. The roof is slate, with the rear blocks having corrugated asbestos roofing. New Mills and numbers 66 to 70 (even) form a group.
