Description

This barn, located 70 metres north-north-east of Nightingale Hall, dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and has a roof covered with corrugated asbestos. The barn consists of five bays aligned approximately east-west, with a midstrey on the north side. There are two lean-to open shelters: one to the north-east, roofed with corrugated asbestos, and another to the north-west, which is roofed with red clay pantiles and corrugated iron. The corners and bay intervals feature plain pilasters. Each bay has blocked high vents on both sides. The gables are timber framed and weatherboarded. The eastern end includes one high casement window, while the western end has an inserted doorway with a pitching door above it and a casement window in the gable. The large doors on the north and south sides are missing, and the northern opening is partly blocked with corrugated asbestos. The walls are 0.61 metres thick at the pilasters and show English bond on the interior. Inside, there are straight tiebeams with pegged branching spur ties to the wallplates, and a joggled butt-purlin roof with two purlins on each pitch. A 20th-century lean-to roof has been added over the midstrey.
