Description
Pentlow Hall is a moated manor house dating to the 15th and 16th centuries, with later alterations and additions. The building is characterized by its exposed timber frame and a central chimney stack constructed of red brick. The roofs are covered in red tiles. Currently arranged in a “H” shape, it has two storeys and a three-window front featuring diamond-leaded, three- or four-light cross transomed casement windows. A central red brick porch bears the Cavendish coat of arms, and a vertically boarded door is sheltered by a flat canopy supported on original carved brackets. A window contains fragments of early stained glass.
The south front features a particularly fine oriel window of twelve lights, with a moulded frame, mullions, transoms, and a carved soffit board, incorporating four early stained glass roundels. Two smaller, matching oriels are located on the ground floor.
Inside, the building retains exposed moulded ceiling beams, as well as rooms with linenfold panelling and moulded panelling. A twisted baluster staircase leads upwards. Notable interior features include a carved stone fireplace, heavily carved brackets supporting the original rear jetty (likely originally door brackets), a carved mantelpiece, and 17th-century iron casement windows. An 18th-century east wing incorporates further original features, such as internal panelled shutters, wainscots, dados, panelled doors with catches, fire surrounds, and corner cupboards. A Waterloo Victory Bell is mounted on the roof.
