Braintree Railway Station and Former Station Master's House

Braintree Railway Station and the former Station Master's House were built in 1865 for the Great Eastern Railway. The station is constructed from red brick, featuring gault brick rusticated quoins, string courses, and eaves courses. The Station Master's house is rendered over brick with similar gault brick detailing and has hipped slate roofs, along with brick ridge and end stacks that have oversailing courses.

The layout is H-shaped, with the Station Master's house located to the left (east) of the station building. The Station Master's house has a symmetrical two-storey east elevation with three windows. It features a central panelled door set in a moulded wood architrave, leading to a semicircular arched entry with a trellised porch. The windows are four-pane sashes set in segmental-arched raised architraves, and the one-bay side walls have similar fenestration.

The station building is one storey high with a three-window range and a projecting bay on the right side. The recessed centre has ornate iron brackets supporting a lean-to canopy over a panelled door, which is flanked by four-pane sashes in keyed segmental-arched raised architraves. There is also a panelled door to the wing on the right, which has a similar window and architrave as the front. The rear elevation mirrors the front, featuring a three-light segmental-arched window with glazing bars for the ticket office. A fretted wood canopy is supported by ornate Gothic-style columns with foliate capitals and brackets adorned with foliate spandrels.

Inside, there are panelled doors and a simple classical fireplace in the waiting room on the right. The central booking hall has a panelled wood screen with pilasters leading to the ticket office on the left.
