Description
The dovecote, built in the late 18th century, is located approximately 30 metres west of Great Codham Hall in Wethersfield. It is constructed of red brick in an irregular bond and features a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The dovecote has a square plan and faces northeast, standing at one storey high.
The central doorway has a two-centred arch made up of two plain orders with plain pilasters, and it is fitted with an oak door and frame. There are two dummy windows, which are outlined in bricks that project outward, each with two-centred heads and plain labels, along with a cross between them, similarly designed. The sides and back of the structure are plain.
The roof is pyramidal and topped with an octagonal wooden cupola, which has an ogival lead roof and a weathervane. The aperture of the dovecote is blocked. Inside, there are wooden racks on each side, featuring three tiers of nine nestboxes supported by wooden brackets. The nestboxes at the front and rear are positioned above those on the sides, all made of softwood. The floor is made of earth.
