Description

Elmhurst is a house dating to the late 16th century, with later alterations in the 18th century, and further extensions in the 20th century. It is timber-framed, with plastered walls and a roof covered in handmade red clay tiles. The main south-facing range comprises two bays, the left of which is from the late 16th century and the right from the 18th century, appearing similar externally. A 20th-century chimney stack is located at the left end, and an 18th-century stack sits in the gable end of the right bay. A 19th-century, one-bay extension runs along the rear of the right bay, and a 20th-century single-storey extension is located to the left rear.

The house has two storeys. The left bay features 20th-century casement windows on each floor, while the right bay has an 18th or early 19th-century sash window of 16 lights. The east elevation displays a two-window range of 20th-century casements, a 20th-century door, and another 20th-century door close to the stack. The left bay exhibits jowled posts, close studding, a face-halved and bladed scarf in the front wallplate, and a clasped purlin roof with arched wind bracing. Diamond-shaped mortices indicate the former location of an unglazed window at the right end, now incorporated into the 18th-century extension. A photograph taken around 1900 shows the building as part of a range of cottages extending eastward; the other cottages have since been demolished.
