Description
Beauchamps is a house that dates back to the early 16th century, with alterations made in the late 16th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof covered in handmade red clay tiles. The main range has two bays and faces northeast, while there is a three-bay crosswing to the left and an internal stack at the junction of the two sections. A stair tower is located in the western angle of the building. There are small 20th-century lean-to extensions on the right side of the hall range and at the rear of the crosswing. The main range is one storey with an attic, and the crosswing is two storeys high.
On the ground floor, there are four 20th-century casement windows, and one on the first floor. The crosswing features a jettied front, with plastered walls except for two exposed beams. A 20th-century door is located behind the right extension. There is one flue at the front of the stack that is cement rendered, possibly from a former oven or boiler. The main range has chamfered joists with step stops, which are jointed to a chamfered binding beam with soffit tenons and diminished haunches. All joists to the left of the binding beam have been severed. The large hearth is blocked, and the roof has been rebuilt in softwood.
The crosswing has some exposed studding on the interior, a chamfered binding beam with lamb's tongue stops, plain joists of horizontal section, jowled posts, and a large hearth that has been reduced for a 20th-century grate. There are diamond mortices for an unglazed window in the rear wall, and an original studded partition on the first floor separates the middle and rear bays. A cambered tiebeam with a peg for a crownpost is present, but the roof has been converted to a clasped purlin form. The original floorboards remain intact. The house is situated on a moated site.
