Description
This is a barn located 20 metres north-west of Coggeshall Hall Farmhouse, dating from the early 16th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof covered in red interlocking concrete tiles. The barn is aligned northeast to southwest and features two threshing bays and ten short bays, with tiebeams at alternate bay posts. It has an overall length of approximately 30 metres and an exceptionally large span of about 7 metres.
There is a midstrey to the southeast near the southwest end, with lean-to extensions on either side. Another midstrey is located to the northwest near the northeast end, accompanied by a lean-to extension in the northern angle. Additional lean-to extensions can be found at the northeast end and in the middle of the northwest side. The posts are alternately jowled and unjowled, with girts and heavy curved tension braces above them, set into heavy studding. Some original tiebeams remain, although the arched braces to them are missing, and some tiebeams have been renewed. The roof was rebuilt in the 20th century.
