Description
Clarks Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates from the 15th century or earlier and the late 16th century. It is timber framed and plastered, featuring gabled roofs covered with peg tiles. The building has one storey and attics, with some sections rising to two storeys, and exhibits a very complex plan. It primarily follows the 'in line' hall house form with a low eaves line, complemented by two gabled flush crosswings at the front. These crosswings display original bargeboards and a carved interlocking decoration, with one wing extending to the rear. A large chimney with four truncated octagonal shafts is positioned on the ridge line above the northern crosswing.
The front of the farmhouse includes an off-centre 20th-century lean-to porch, 19th-century mullion and transomed casements, and a gabled dormer situated between the gabled wings. At the south end, there is a two-storey structure with a gabled peg tile roof, which may have served as a garderobe tower. To the northeast, a large two-storey extension from the 17th century is present, along with additional rear lean-tos and extensions.
Inside, there are remnants of a late medieval hall house, including a steeply cambered hall tie beam. The inserted 17th-century floor features stop-chamfered joists. There are also some late 18th-century elements, such as a fire surround, several doors, and an arch-headed recess with serpentine shelves. An internal spiral staircase includes a uniquely moulded handrail of uncertain date.
