Description
Nos 22 and 24 on High Street is a large red brick house built in the latter half of the 18th century by Jas Scarlet, who died in 1807. The building has three storeys and cellars, topped with a red plain tile roof featuring two hipped ends. It has a five-window range, plus an additional two-window range at the west end, with double-hung sashes and glazing bars set in plain reveals.
The central first floor features a Venetian window with an Ionic order, topped by a Diocletian window. The front of the building breaks forward under a pediment, which contains one window range. It has a parapet, a stone modillioned cornice, a moulded stone coat of arms beneath the pediment, and a stone band between the ground and first floors. There are two central doorways with six-panelled doors and a three-pillared common porch, accessed by steps with iron handrails.
On the ground floor, there is a modern brick bay at the east end. The rear of the building showcases a good brick facade with three-storey bay windows on each side. Inside, there is high-quality late 18th-century detailing, including some murals. The roof construction is original, and there are signs in the cellars of an earlier building on the site.
