Description
No 19 High Street is a shop and flat that dates from the late 15th century to early 16th century, having been heightened and refronted in the early 19th century. The building is timber-framed with a rendered exterior and features a slate roof behind a moulded cornice and parapet. There is a red brick stack on the right-hand side. The structure has three storeys and one window. The second floor includes a 12-pane sash window with an architrave surround, while the first floor has an 8:2 vertical sash window with a moulded architrave and a 20th-century head. The shopfront is also from the 20th century.
Inside, the ground floor displays common oak joists with a heavy horizontal section, framed into the rear midrail with centre tenons. Evidence of the original jetty brackets and a previous transverse partition can be seen in the open motice. The first floor features a wall frame with a long curved brace and a 16th-century chimneystack, along with a chamfered spine beam and a plank cupboard with old hinges. The second floor was added in the 19th century. Originally, Nos 17 and 19 were one house.
