Description

This monument, located approximately 4 meters southeast of the south porch of the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Black Notley, commemorates John Ray M.A., F.R.S. (1627-1702), an early botanist and natural historian. It is a tall structure made of white marble, featuring a moulded base and a tall square panelled pedestal with a moulded capital. The pedestal is topped by a moulded cornice and an obelisk with a flame finial, resting on a plain support base. Each side of the base has foliate supports that frame central shields. The main column includes Latin inscriptions on its panels.
