Description
Lyston Mill is a mill house dating from around 1797, featuring a double range design. It is constructed with a timber frame and clad in beaded weatherboard, topped with a red tiled roof and a moulded eaves cornice. The building has two storeys and a two-window range of small paned sliding sashes, complete with original shutters and pelmets above. Bargeboards adorn the gables, and there is a central four-panelled door with a moulded surround and a flat canopy. A central red brick chimney stack is also present. This site by the River Stour has housed a watermill for centuries, originally owned by the Abbots of St. Edmundsbury, with the last mill being demolished in 1887. Inside, there is notable 18th-century detail, including an alcove, corner cupboard, doors, and wainscoting. The front garden is enclosed by cast iron railings featuring urn heads on the gate posts, ornate rail heads, and arrow heads on the lower rails.
