Grigg'S Farmhouse

Grigg's Farmhouse is a house that dates from the 17th century and early 19th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It is timber framed, plastered, and features some painted brick, with a roof covered in handmade red plain tiles. The 17th-century section has a four-bay range facing northeast, with an internal stack at the right end, and a 20th-century semi-circular single-storey extension at the front. To the left is an early 19th-century three-bay range, which has internal stacks at both ends. The building is two storeys high and has a cellar.

The right range features 20th-century casement windows, while the left range has two original ground floor sash windows with 16 lights made of crown glass, and two similar sash windows plus one with 12 lights on the first floor above the central door. The central entrance has a flush six-panel door set in a simple doorcase with a moulded pediment supported by scrolled brackets. All the rear windows are 20th-century casements, and there is a 20th-century half-glazed door.

Inside, the right range has stop-chamfered binding beams with lamb's tongue stops and plain joists of vertical section. The left range features boxed axial beams and an original staircase with a wreathed moulded handrail, stick balusters, and scrolled tread-ends. The farmhouse was recorded as Gurton's Farm in the tithe award of 1853, held at the Essex Record Office.
