Description

Termitt's Farmhouse is a house dating from the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The house features a 2-bay hall facing northwest, which has an axial stack near the left end, and two 2-bay crosswings. There is a 20th-century external stack to the right. To the left, there is a single-storey lean-to extension with a slate roof, and in front of it, a 20th-century external stack. Beyond this is a tiled single-storey extension. The building stands two storeys high with attics. On the ground floor, there are four 20th-century sash windows and two 20th-century casements, while the first floor has five 20th-century casements.

The farmhouse has a two-storey porch with a half-glazed door set in a 20th-century pedimented doorcase. Both crosswings are jettied, and the original structure is covered. Most of the interior is plastered, featuring a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops from a 16th-century inserted floor, with some step stops visible on the posts. The roofs of the hall and crosswings are original, constructed with butt-purlins and arched wind braces, and the roof of the hall is heavily smoke-blackened. This construction style is unusual in Essex before the late 16th century, indicating possible Midlands influence. The height of the hall, which allows for two storeys of good height, suggests that it originally had high manorial status, further supported by the two-storey porch, likely added in the 16th century. The timber structure of the walls is probably undisturbed, although it is concealed by plaster.
