Description
The Variety Shop is a house and shop that dates back to the 16th century, with a refronting around 1711, as indicated by an inscription on a plaster panel in the east gable. The building has undergone some alterations in the 20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with panelled roughcast render on the main facade and a plain tiled roof from the 20th century. There are two rear stacks, and the building stands two storeys tall, with a single-storey range to the east and a 16th-century rear wing to the north that follows the boundary line.
On the street elevation, there is a moulded wooden eaves cornice with dentil enrichment. To the left of the glazed shop door, there is a large four-paned shop window with a wooden entablature. The first floor has three flush-framed hung sash windows, two of which have sixteen panes, while the small central window has four panes. Inside, there is a large hearth positioned at an angle to the room, exposed 16th-century timber framing, and some early 18th-century doors.
